Saint Guru Ravidas was a great poet, philosopher and social reformer. Saint Ravidas was born in 1377 on Magh Purnima in Varanasi region of Uttar Pradesh. Therefore, Ravidas Jayanti is celebrated every year on the day of Magh Purnima. But there are different opinions among scholars regarding his birth. His mother’s name was Karma Devi and father’s name was Santosh Das. Saint Ravidas was born in a cobbler family and his father used to make shoes.
Ravidas ji was brave and a devotee of God since childhood. He received education from Pandit Shardanand Guru. As Ravidas ji grew older, his interest in devotion also increased. For livelihood, Ravidas ji, while doing his ancestral work, also remained engrossed in the devotion of God. Being from a cobbler family, he used to make shoes and also enjoyed doing his ancestral work. He used to do his work with honesty, hard work and full dedication. He also used to teach people to follow the path of religion.
